ZOMG U Have Questions? We Got Answers (Prolly).
Here are some questions that you may have before purchasing, or when using OnSong Console. (Basically, the stuff you'll Google at 2 AM.)
- Does Console work on Windows or just Mac?
- OnSong Console works on both Windows & Mac, and like, probably Linux too if you're feeling spicy. It just needs a modern web browser that doesn't suck & actually supports HTML 5 & CSS 3 web standards.
- Do I need to purchase Console for every device I own?
- Nope! OnSong Console is either an in-app purchase, or it's totes included in your OnSong Premium subscription. Both are available on like a bajillion devices as long as you're signed in with your Apple ID or OnSong account. Nice, amirite?
- My computer is wired to my network, but my iPad is wireless. Will Console still work?
- Yep. As long as both devices are chillin' on the same network, wired or wireless don't matter much. EXCEPT—and this is a big except—some routers are basically tiny control freaks & set up different networks for each connection method. You'll wanna dig into your router's manual & figure out how to merge those networks if things get weird.
- Both my devices are on the same network but I only get a blank screen in my web browser. Why?
- OnSong Console works by turnin' your iPad or iPhone into a lil' web server, which some networks find very offensive for mysterious reasons. Try this if you're stuck starin' at the void:
- Make sure your iPad or iPhone is on & OnSong is actually runnin'. Console needs OnSong to be up & breathin' to chat with you.
- Go to the Console screen in the Utilities menu & toggle Console off then on, or just restart your iPad like it's 1995. Sometimes the web address shown is totally wrong, especially when you're network-hoppin'.
- Double-check you're typin' the web address right. You gotta add http:// before the four-part IP address thingy, & don't forget the colon & port number (5076). Yes, we're that annoying.
- OnSong Console uses ports 80, 5076 & 5077. Some networks are paranoid & block these. Log into your router & tell it to chill & let these ports through. Corporate networks? They're even worse—check with your IT overlords if you're allowed to run Console at work.
- If you've got a firewall on your computer, turn it off temporarily & see if that was the jerk blockin' you.
- Try a different network. Maybe your current one just hates you.
- Can I use my iPhone or iPad hotspot connection instead of a WiFi access point to use Console?
- Totally. Fire up the hotspot in your device's Settings & pick WiFi. (Bluetooth & USB are gonna ghost you.) Connect your computer to the hotspot, & connect your device if it's not already the hotspot. Fair warnin': some carriers might bleed you dry for hotspot usage.
- My Console screen is telling me to type in 127.0.0.1:5076 and it doesn't work. Any ideas?
- 127.0.0.1 is basically your iPad or iPhone talkin' to itself & not in a healthy way. It means the network IP address got lost in the sauce. Pop into the Console screen & toggle Console off then on to see if it magically becomes smarter. Or go to Share menu » Connect » Servers & grab the IP address under your device's name.
- My Console screen is telling me to type in an IP address that starts with 169...* and it doesn't work. Any ideas?
- IP addresses in that range usually mean your DHCP (the thing that hands out IP addresses) totally ghosted you. You probably gotta go into your network settings & renew the lease to force the network to actually do its job & assign you a real IP address.
- Why is the "Follow" button disabled in OnSong Console?
- The Follow button needs Web Sockets—basically a fancy way for two devices to gossip directly over the network. It gets disabled when the OnSong web socket server won't start. Could be too many devices fightin' over the socket port, or your network's got trust issues & blocks it.
- What web browsers does Console work with?
- OnSong Console is HTML 5 & web-based, so it's cool with modern versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox & Internet Explorer. (Older IE versions? LOL, good luck.) Different browsers have their own quirks & we're still tweakin' around those hot messes.
- I'm getting just the opening screen with the OnSong logo and it gets stuck. Why?
- OnSong Console needs Javascript turned on to talk to your device. Go into your web browser's preferences & make sure Javascript isn't disabled, & that you don't have some sketchy security plugin killin' the vibes.
